Cover Design | Lit Designers

Covers worth picking up.

Your cover is the hardest-working piece of marketing your book will ever have. We design it the way the major houses do, then hand you files ready for every format and every platform.

It starts face to face.

Before a single pixel is drawn, we sit down with you on a live, face-to-face video call over Zoom. This is where we learn your story, your readers, and the feeling you want your cover to carry.

Together we settle the three things that shape everything after: the scope of the work, the visual style and genre direction, and the formats you need. You leave the call knowing exactly what we are making and why.

Schedule Your Call

Every cover starts on a call like this one.

You are in charge. We just show you the options.

Every cover starts with three complete directions, not one. Different type, different palette, different mood — the same book. You see all three side by side and tell us which one is yours.

Below is a real example: one children’s title, worked up three ways. Nothing here is a rough sketch. Each one is a finished cover you could put in front of a reader tomorrow, because you cannot judge a direction from a thumbnail and a promise.

Cover direction one: bouncing display lettering, teetering striped trees and a flat limited palette
Direction One

Whimsical Rhyme

Bouncing hand-set lettering, a strictly limited palette, and shapes that lean. Loud, funny, and built to be read out loud at speed.

Cover direction two: folk-art gouache with layered hills, a barn with a lit window and cross-stitch stars
Direction Two

Folk Gouache

Painted, warm and quiet. Layered hills, a lit window, a paper grain you can almost feel. The bedtime end of the shelf.

Cover direction three: scratchy pen line with watercolour washes offset from the drawing
Direction Three

Ink and Wash

A loose pen line with the colour running deliberately off-register. Classic, a little anarchic, and full of movement.

Not sure what you want? That is a good answer too.

You do not need to arrive with a vision. Most authors don’t, and saying so is genuinely useful — it means we get to show you the range before anything is decided. Take one direction whole. Take the type from one and the colour from another. Throw all three out and ask for three more. It is your name on the cover, so it is your call, every time.

1

Tell us what you can

A short worksheet, filled in as much or as little as you like. Blanks are information too — they tell us where you want us to lead.

2

We come back with three

Three finished, genuinely different directions. Not one idea and two versions of it wearing a hat.

3

You drive from there

Pick, mix, or send us back out. We refine the one you choose until you would happily hand it to a stranger.

One book. Every format.

Readers meet your book in more places than ever. We design your cover to look right in every one of them, from the bookstore shelf to the phone in a commuter's hand.

Paperback edition of the sample title Ember Court

Paperback

12.5 × 9 in · full wrap

Back cover, spine and front on one flat sheet. The spine width is calculated from the final page count — change the page count and it has to be rebuilt.

Hardcover edition of the sample title Ember Court

Hardcover

18.5 × 9 in · dust jacket

The same artwork plus two three-inch flaps: the teaser on the front flap, the author on the back. Nothing else on a book carries this much copy.

Ebook edition of the sample title Ember Court

Ebook

5 × 8 in · front only

No spine, no back. It has to survive being shrunk to a search result and still say what the book is.

Audiobook edition of the sample title Ember Court

Audiobook

5 × 5 in · square

Audio storefronts crop to a square. A cover designed only for print loses its title here, so the square is composed, not cropped by accident.

All four are the same sample title, Ember Court by J. T. Vance — a fictional book, shown at its true proportions.

Print-ready, down to the millimeter

A beautiful design is only half the job. The other half is a file that prints perfectly, every copy, every time. We build yours to professional production standards so nothing is left to chance.

  • Correct bleed and trim so artwork runs cleanly to the page edge
  • Spine width calculated to your exact page count and paper stock
  • Print-grade color so what you approve is what arrives
  • High-resolution files that stay crisp at full size

Built for the platforms you publish on

Every platform has its own quirks, dimensions, and rules. We prepare your files to each one's exact specifications, so uploading your cover is a non-event instead of a headache.
